Jewellery Care

Wear Factors

When wearing fine jewellery and gemstones, be aware that activity that subjects fine jewellery and gemstones to sharp blows — such as gardening, working with hand tools, or playing sports — may cause damage. Diamonds also are susceptible to damage from an impact, which might cause them to chip or crack. Jewellery, especially rings, should be removed before doing household chores.

Apply hair spray, lotions, or perfumes before you put on your jewellery. Chemicals present in any of these may cause damage, especially to cultured pearls. Wipe your pearls with a soft chamois or flannel cloth after each wearing to remove skin oils and salts. A few coloured gemstones, such as kunzite, may fade when worn in sunlight or in a tanning booth.

Few watches are waterproof, though many are water-resistant. If moisture or dust has penetrated the case of your watch, have it checked only by an authorized technician. Attempts by an untrained repair person may seriously damage the watch and invalidate factory warranties. To keep metal watches looking their best, use a polishing cloth made for metal.

Cleaning Do’s and Don’ts

In most cases, you can ensure a lifetime of pleasurable wear through routine home care of your fine jewellery supplemented by regular care from your American Gem Society™ jeweller.

Many jewellers provide cleaning as a free service to their customers along with complimentary check-ups to be certain the gemstones are secure and safe in their settings.

Ask your jeweller for at-home cleaning instructions when purchasing fine jewellery and gemstones. Regular cleaning of your fine jewellery and gemstones is recommended. At home, use a special commercial jewellery cleaner available at many jewellery stores. Check with your American Gem Society jeweller, however, before using these cleaning products.

Chemicals in some products can damage certain gems, such as pearls, even if they are considered to be mild. Soft brushes used in applying cleaners also can damage pearls. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, heat, hot water, and steamers. Use a special commercial cleaner recommended by your jeweller to clean your pearls or use mild soap and water. For pearl strands, avoid getting the string wet since it will stretch or break. Be sure to dry your pearls completely on a flat surface before storing them. Polishing cloths for use on karat gold, sterling silver, or other jewellery metals are available at your local jeweller. Do not use paper towels; they can scratch the metal.

Ultrasonic Home Cleaners

Home ultrasonic cleaners are best used for karat gold jewellery without gemstones. The ultrasonic also may be suitable for some diamond-set jewellery; however, the intense vibrations can loosen gems. DO NOT use the ultrasonic cleaner on precious gems such as lapis, coral, pearl, or dyed gemstones. Unless you are absolutely sure about using such a device to clean a piece of jewellery, don’t do it.

Storage

Protect your jewellery when it is not being worn, or when traveling, by separating items from one another using individual compartments in your jewellery box. When improperly stored, gemstone jewellery items can damage each other. For example, diamonds will scratch all other gemstones, including rubies, sapphires, and emeralds. Additionally, most gemstones will scratch gold, silver, and platinum. Pearls deserve special attention. Separate pearl items in individual silk or cotton pouches and be sure your pearls are clean and dry before storing.

Schedule Routine Appointments

Depending on the frequency of wear, visit your American Gem Society jeweller at least twice a year for professional cleaning. The jeweller will check the prongs for wear and security as well as the gemstone itself for any damage or needed re-polishing. Supplement professional cleanings by using a special commercial jewellery cleaner available for purchase at many jewellery stores.
